Understand your spending categories

Compare category spending with monthly budgets, then check the underlying transactions.

After signing in, open Help in the sidebar to start an interactive guide.

You need spending transactions in the period you have selected.

How to do it

  1. Open Categories in the sidebar, or select View all categories under Categories on Home.
  2. Choose the currency and period. Switch the chart between ranking, trends and share, where colours identify the categories. Nora remembers your chart and period length for this account in this browser, without syncing across devices, and an explicit selection in a link wins.
  3. The summary opens with what you spent this period and how that compares. If you have a budget in the selected currency, it then shows that budget and what is left of it.
  4. The list shows the categories with activity this period, most spent first, with their subcategories collapsed. Expand a category to see them; parent totals always include their subcategories.
  5. A budgeted category shows a budget meter of spending against plan, which turns red once you go past the plan. A category with no budget shows spending only.
  6. Switch the list to All to browse every category, or open No activity this period at the bottom to see the ones you did not use.
  7. Search or sort the list, and open a category name for its detail view or an amount for the supporting transactions.

Parent totals include their subcategories. Open an amount to check the transactions for the same period, currency and category scope.

Having trouble?
  • Rankings count posted spending only, leaving out pending activity and transfers. A different transaction filter can give you a different total.
  • Nora never adds amounts across currencies. Use the currency selector to see spending held in another account currency.
  • System category names follow your language. Custom names stay exactly as you typed them.
  • Category budget figures come from your monthly budget in the selected currency, and they appear on monthly periods only. Edit the targets in Budgets.
  • Spending with no available category is grouped as Uncategorized at the end of the list, and it still counts towards the period total.
  • Comparisons are worded to stay readable. A category’s first period reads New, a category you stopped using reads No spending, and a jump up from a very small amount reports how much it moved instead of a huge percentage.
