Ask Nora about your finances

Use your connected data to explore a specific financial question.

How to do it

  1. Open Chat. Choose a starter question or write one in Message Nora.
  2. Say which period or account you want to look at. Never include bank credentials.
  3. Read your draft, then choose Send message. Picking a suggestion never sends it on its own.
  4. Check the dates, sources, calculations and limitations in the reply before you rely on it.
  5. Activity steps stay collapsed while Nora works. Open Activity when you want to read them.
  6. When a reply has section tabs, select one to switch views. In a narrow chat, the tabs and longer labels wrap onto extra lines.
  7. Open a linked financial page in this tab and the conversation stays beside it. Your draft and any running response survive moving around the workspace.
  8. Ask Nora how much is left in a category, which categories are over budget or closest to it, why a category is over, or how last month went. Nora reads your saved targets and the results calculated on the server. Name a currency if you keep more than one plan. Open the evidence panel, then View budget, to check the same month yourself.
  9. Use Nora presentation (…) to choose Dock to side, Float or Hide Nora. Expand goes full screen, and Back to page returns you to the view and page you were on.
  10. Resize the sidebar by dragging its divider, or by focusing the divider and using the arrow keys. Docking is offered only while the page has room for it. A narrower window floats Nora for a while, then docks it again once the space comes back.
  11. Nora remembers your presentation and width for this account in this browser. Hide Nora does not stop a response, so use Stop generating for that. Drafts live only in the open workspace and disappear on reload or sign-out.
  12. Select an action button to open Budgets, Accounts, Recurring, Merchants, Categories, Settings or Help. Transaction rows open the editor you already know, and evidence links keep the filters they support. The actions work in floating, docked and full-screen Nora, and in Board chat. Opening an editor saves nothing by itself.
  13. Ask Nora to create an Excel financial report, for example monthly spending by category for a named year. Specify the dates, currency, columns or grouping you need, then select Download in the reply. Ask for categories as rows and months as columns to get an annual matrix (up to twelve calendar months), and request supporting transactions if needed. Reports can contain up to four sheets, including supporting transaction sheets; the server fills them from the same available records and checks totals separately for each currency. Workbook labels follow your account language, or you can request English or French.
  14. Ask for a transaction report with calculated columns in your preferred order, for example description, category, merchant, amount and cumulative merchant amount this month. Available calculations include running totals, totals, counts, running counts, average amounts, shares, month, weekday, weekend and amount thresholds. Totals, counts, averages and shares can cover the whole report or reset each calendar month, optionally grouped by merchant or category.
  15. Ask for a monthly financial review to see income, spending, income minus spending and category totals. For a comparison, specify a current period and an earlier period, for example February versus January, with spending or income grouped by category or merchant.
  16. To fill an existing workbook, select Attach Excel workbook below Message Nora, choose an .xlsx file up to 3 MB, then describe the cells, periods or changes you want. You can use Nora financial records, information you provide in chat, or calculations from the worksheet. Selected cell contents are shared with AI for this request.
  17. Nora returns a new copy and summarizes changes. Continue in the same chat, for example “Now add October.” Each original and edited version is retained for seven days from creation. Open the downloaded copy in Excel to recalculate formulas and charts.

A successful response is recorded separately from sending the question. A failed or cancelled response does not complete a new-question walkthrough.

Having trouble?
  • If a response fails, check that your data is available and try again. A request that never returned an answer does not count as a completed one.
  • If an attachment fails, follow its specific error: sign in again for an expired session, use Nora’s configured app address for a blocked request, wait a minute after too many attempts, or retry if the upload service is temporarily unavailable. File-format restrictions apply only when the workbook is rejected as unsupported.
  • What can Nora see? explains the connected-data scope.
  • Chat explains your finances. It cannot make transfers, trades or payments.
  • Chat cannot change your targets. Each request covers up to six months of history and reflects your current records, including corrections you made later. A missing target is not a zero budget, and a parent allowance is shared across its children. Transaction examples are a sample. Upcoming estimates are incomplete, so they cannot tell you what is safe to spend. When Nora answers, the Chat AI provider processes the relevant budget targets, the results and a limited amount of category transaction evidence.
  • If an action is unsupported, invalid or unavailable, Nora shows an error. Use the app menu to open the destination yourself. Nora does not navigate away from your message on its own, and it does not change financial records. Product Help search inside chat is not available yet.
  • Excel reports exclude pending transactions by default, keep currencies separate and include Report notes explaining calculations and coverage. Each sheet shows its date range, currency, filter types, pending selection and generation time. Dates are native Excel dates; amounts use currency precision and preserve extra recorded decimal places. Frozen headers and wrapped descriptions make reports easier to read. Spending summaries use expense transactions; income summaries use income transactions, excluding transfers. Missing bank history is not zero activity. Matrix months without matching records remain blank and show unknown coverage; future and partial periods are labeled. Recorded zero totals remain zero. Even a month with records does not prove complete bank coverage.
  • Monthly reviews cover one calendar month, including partial months; transfers and neutral entries are excluded, and income minus spending is not an account balance. Comparisons use identical filters for both periods, show each date range and day count, and calculate current minus previous. Percentage change is unavailable when the previous total is zero or negative; when an entire currency has no matching records in a period, its total and changes remain blank. Unequal periods are not normalized. Headline totals remain fixed when you filter category rows in Excel. The 10,000-transaction limit covers both comparison periods combined.
  • Calculated columns are fixed values, not Excel formulas. Editing, sorting or filtering the downloaded file does not recalculate them. Running values follow transaction date/time and a stable transaction order for ties. Calculations use only matching records inside your requested dates and filters; a monthly reset does not fetch missing days. Currencies remain separate: include a currency column or select one currency for monetary calculations. Amounts retain their recorded signs; a sum across income and expenses is not net cash flow. Shares are blank when the group total is zero or negative. Missing merchants or categories form an Unassigned group. Check Report notes for each column’s scope. Calculated columns are available on transaction listings; request a separate listing if you also want a summary.
  • Each sheet supports up to 10,000 matching transactions and each workbook up to 5 MB; narrow the request if it is too large. This limit describes generated reports. Uploaded workbooks use the editing workflow above.
  • Generated workbooks are private snapshots available for seven days. Sign in as the same user to download them. After expiry, ask Nora to create a new report. Deleting a connection’s data removes all retained workbook snapshots for your account; copies you downloaded are not removed. Workbooks do not change when you later edit transactions.
  • Edits preserve unrelated content. Existing inputs or formulas are replaced only when requested. Nora can add sheets or append cells in new rows/columns, but cannot insert/delete/reorder existing rows/columns or resize existing Excel tables. Macros, external links/data, embedded objects, pivots and protected-sheet edits are unsupported.
  • If a row could mean a forecast, savings target, repayment or account balance, clarify what you want. No matching financial records produces a blank rather than an assumed zero. Formula results are calculated by Excel, not verified by Nora. Removing a draft attachment leaves the private upload until its seven-day expiry; re-upload an expired file to continue.
